Air ambulance is becoming increasingly popular in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, where heli-charter services are used to ferry patients needing urgent medical attention. These services are also expanding into hard-to-reach regions, particularly in the North-East, where the government is actively working to connect remote tourist destinations. Notably, Apollo Hospitals recently launched an air ambulance network in partnership with Aviators Air Rescue.

During the Kerala floods, over 38 helicopters were deployed, showcasing their crucial role in disaster response. A notable case involved a “flying ICU” saving a heart attack victim in a remote area—equipped with ventilators, monitors, oxygen cylinders, and staffed by a team of specialist doctors and paramedics.

With growing awareness and demand for quicker medical responses, the air ambulance sector in India is witnessing significant growth. These airborne services reduce the time required to transport patients from remote or congested areas to advanced medical facilities, proving to be a lifesaver in emergencies. Many private hospitals and aviation companies are now entering this space to provide high-quality, time-sensitive medical transport. Additionally, the government’s regional connectivity scheme (UDAN) is further encouraging the use of helicopters in inaccessible terrains. As technology improves and infrastructure expands, air ambulances are expected to play a pivotal role in India’s emergency response system.
